Oriental Kiln Alchemy: The 1,400-Year-Old Teaware That Transforms Your Tea
The story of your mug begins in Qinzhou, China, home to the legendary Nixing clay, revered as one of the “Four Great Types of Pottery” in China. For centuries, artisans have harnessed the unique properties of this red earth, blending soft clay from the east bank of the Qin River with hard clay from the west. The true magic, however, happens in the kiln. Nixing clay undergoes a mesmerizing process called “Yao Bian,” or kiln-transformation. Without the use of any artificial glaze, the extreme heat coaxes out a stunning array of natural colors—from deep crimsons to subtle purples and jade-like greens. This means that every single mug you create is a one-of-a-kind piece of art, bearing a unique pattern bestowed by fire itself.
